Sometimes you just need a couple bubble braids 🫧

When my curls are doing the most (aka: big volume, little patience), I always reach for bubble braids on curly hair. It’s one of those “easy cute curly hair style” moments that looks like effort… but honestly takes way less skill than a real braid. If you can’t braid, this hairstyle is for you ✨

I love it because it works on so many hair types and lengths: short curls, long curls, stretched curls, day-2 curls, even hair that’s half frizzy half defined. Bubble braids don’t ask for perfection—they just need a few elastics and a little smoothing.

What makes bubble braids so curly-hair friendly?

Curly hair already has natural texture, so the “bubbles” look fuller without needing teasing or extra padding. The style also helps keep hands out of hair (which means less frizz later), and it’s a cute way to switch things up when you want something a little spicy 🌶️ but still simple.

Another reason I keep coming back to this look: you can control the vibe. Tight and sleek for a clean look, or soft and puffy for that romantic, airy finish. Both are valid. Both are cute.

What you’ll need (keep it simple)

1) Strong small elastics (you’ll need a lot). Bubble braids are basically an elastic commitment. If your hair is thick, grab extra because you’ll go through them fast.

2) A detangling tool (wide-tooth comb or brush that won’t snag).

3) Leave-in conditioner + gel to smooth and moisturize. This combo is the secret sauce for curly bubble braids that look polished instead of puffy-frizzy.

4) Optional: edge brush for the hairline, a little water spray to re-wet sections, and a soft scrunchie if you want to swap the first elastic for something gentler.

Prep tips (this is where the magic happens)

If you want the style to look clean and last longer, prep matters more than people think. My best results happen when:

➡️ Hair is fully wet and detangled. Not “kinda damp,” not “I misted it once.” Fully wet hair lets product spread evenly and helps curls lay smoother into ponytails.

➡️ Leave-in first, gel second. Leave-in gives slip and moisture; gel gives hold and that smooth finish around the elastics.

➡️ Use your discretion with elastics. Rubber bands can be prone to popping more than hair ties, especially if hair is thick or very coily. Sometimes one wrap is enough; sometimes you’ll need two. If it feels like it’s pulling too hard, it’s too tight.

Style option 1: Two classic bubble braids (the easiest go-to)

This is the “Bubble braids 🩵” version I do when I want something quick and cute.

Step 1: Create two ponytails. Part hair down the middle (or slightly off-center if you like it softer). Gather each side into a ponytail. You can place them high for a playful look, mid for everyday, or low for a more chill vibe.

Step 2: Secure each ponytail with a strong elastic. This first elastic is the anchor. If this part is loose, the whole bubble braid can slide.

Step 3: Start making bubbles down each ponytail. Move about 1–2 inches down (or more if you want bigger bubbles), add another elastic, then gently pull the hair between elastics outward to “puff” it into a bubble shape.

Step 4: Repeat until you reach the ends. Yes, you will use a lot of elastics. That’s normal. That’s the look.

Step 5: Adjust the bubbles. I like to pinch and pull a little on each side of the bubble so it looks even. Don’t overdo it—curly hair expands as it dries, so a small bubble now can become a big cute bubble later.

Style option 2: Half up half down bubble braids 💋

Half up half down bubble braids are my favorite when I want my curls out but still want my face framed and lifted. It’s giving “done” without losing the curly hair moment.

Step 1: Section the top half. Use your thumbs to trace from temples to the crown and gather the top section. Keep the bottom curls loose.

Step 2: Make two mini ponytails (or one, your choice). For the “couple bubble braids” look, do two small ponytails on the top half—one on each side. Secure with elastics.

Step 3: Bubble braid each mini ponytail. Add elastics down the mini ponytail and puff each section into bubbles. Because it’s half-up, you usually need fewer elastics, which is nice.

Step 4: Blend with the rest of your curls. This is the part that makes it look extra cute: lightly fluff the loose curls underneath so the top bubbles sit on a soft curly base.

Optional detail: Pull out a couple face-framing curls and define them with a tiny bit of leave-in + gel. It makes the whole style look intentional.

Style option 3: Bubble braid “braid-out” vibes (no complicated skills)

If you like the idea of taking bubble braids down later for a textured result, you can treat it like a set. I’ll do bubble braids on damp, product-loaded hair, let it dry fully, then take the elastics out carefully. The hair usually has a stretched, wavy-curly pattern that feels like a cute switch-up from my regular curl shape.

Important: Make sure hair is completely dry before taking it down. If it’s even a little damp, it can frizz fast and lose definition.

How to make bubble braids look fuller (without making them messy)

1) Space your elastics intentionally. Bigger spacing = bigger bubbles. Smaller spacing = more bubbles and a more detailed look. I usually do medium spacing so it looks balanced.

2) Puff from the center, not the ends. When you pull the bubble outward, pinch the middle section and gently fan it out. If you tug too hard near the elastics, the bubble can look uneven.

3) Let curls do their thing. Curly hair naturally adds volume, so you don’t need to over-pull. A little puff goes a long way.

How to keep it sleek at the roots (especially on curly hair)

Curly roots can get puffy fast, which is cute, but sometimes you want a smoother finish. Here’s what helps me:
